The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) and National Communications Officer of the NDC Mr Sammy Gyamfi, has filed a defamation lawsuit against Valentina Nana Agyeiwaa, widely known as Afia Schwarzenegger, at the Accra High Court.
Sammy Gyamfi is seeking GH₵10 million (USD 1.2 million) in general and exemplary damages, along with a permanent injunction and a public retraction/apology.
What sparked the suit
Afia Schwarzenegger posted a TikTok video—partially in Asante Twi, later translated into English in court documents—making serious allegations about Gyamfi:
That he was having extramarital relationships with female students from the University of Ghana.
That he was purchasing vehicles for these alleged girlfriends.
That he bought property in the U.S. for his wife or his wife’s supposed sister, named “Vida”
A key quote from the video:
“Tell Sammy Gyamfi’s wife that I am greeting her. Her husband is still buying cars for girls in Legon… Even his wife’s younger sister has bought a house in the US.”
Gyamfi’s response
In the statement of claim filed on 23 July 2025, Gyamfi’s attorneys at Sustineri Lawyers (PRUC) contend that:
The allegations are false, malicious, and aimed at tarnishing his reputation.
He has not purchased any U.S. property for his wife or any “Vida”—she doesn’t exist in his family.
He has never bought cars for any University of Ghana student or maintained romantic relationships with them.
Since the video’s release, he’s endured embarrassing calls and inquiries from officials, party members, family, and international associates.
Reliefs demanded
Gyamfi is requesting multiple forms of redress:
Declaration that the statements are defamatory.
General and exemplary damages of GH₵10 million.
A perpetual injunction preventing future defamatory remarks.
A public retraction and apology, to run on the front and back pages of Daily Graphic for three days and across all her social media platforms.
Legal costs, including attorneys’ fees
Afia Schwarzenegger’s stance
While she hasn’t filed a formal court response yet, in another TikTok clip she indicated she won’t contest the case and even congratulated Gyamfi on what she expects to be his victory.
The court has given her eight days to file an official response after the documents are served.
Legal & public implications
Defamation landscape: This case highlights the high-stakes consequences of potentially defamatory statements on social media in Ghana.
Public figures under scrutiny: Gyamfi’s public and political roles amplify the reputational stakes.
Media accountability: The suit underscores the need for verification before making serious allegations—and holds public figures accountable for their words.
What’s next
Afia Schwarzenegger must submit her formal defense within eight days of being served.
If she contests, court proceedings—including discovery, witnesses, and possibly a trial—could follow.
If she acknowledges liability early, negotiations for a settlement or formal apology might ensue.
This lawsuit illustrates the tension between provocative social commentary and legal accountability. A man holding a high-profile position is seeking serious remedies after claims he says have harmed his name. The coming weeks—including Afia’s formal response—will likely define the tone of this dispute going forward.
