Five individuals have been apprehended by the police in the Ashanti Region for their alleged involvement in assaulting fire officers who were responding to a fire incident at the racecourse market on Monday, March 11, 2024.

The situation worsened as the individuals reportedly assaulted the firefighters for their delayed arrival at the location.

Consequently, due to the altercation, one of the fire officers was injured, leading to the apprehension of the five suspects.

The fire broke out at 1:00 am on Monday and rapidly spread, causing millions of Ghana cedis worth of damage.

Around 180 shops in containers were consumed by the fire, resulting in considerable property destruction.

Many traders at the market were heartbroken because they couldn’t save their belongings from the fire.

Additionally, more than 20 milling machines were damaged in the fire, making the losses suffered by the impacted merchants even worse

The fire at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital Fire Station spread quickly due to the attack on the fire crew, according to Fire Commander Simon Ben Boadu.

He emphasized the severe outcomes of violence in emergency response scenarios.

“Our preliminary investigations revealed that, the fire started from one of the corn mills, and because the shops are close, it spread to over 180 shops” he said.
